KOMONO – LIGHT BLUE CAPSULE COLLECTION

 

 

During the late seventies and early eighties, one of the worst droughts in L.A.’s history occurred which drained hundreds of backyard pools all dotted around the city. These pools formed the backdrop for a group of teenagers who used the steep, smooth pools to introduce a new fashion of skateboarding. Characterized by a low-center-of-gravity, surf-style attacks, this new style soon developed into a global craze which until today remains the base of modern skate culture.

 

Inspired by the concrete waves of L.A. pools, KOMONO launches a capsule of inspired glasses, watches and eyewear accessories in a striking light blue. The campaign, shot at the legendary Pink Motel, features a wide-templed Avery and rounded Ana.

KOMONO SS20 OPTICALS COLLECTION

 

 

For Spring/Summer 2020, KOMONO embraces boldness to maximum effect.

Distinctively premium, the optical collection introduces three new weighty, handcrafted Italian acetate frames. The Mario, Uma and Jeff are characterized by its massive quality and luxury feel.

More experimental shapes are introduced with the Judy, an oversized hexagon frame, the Stanley, a well-defined narrow model with double bridge and the Piper, a more rounded, subtle style.

Following up on last season’s Slim series, Spring/Summer 2020 also introduces oversized variations of two of KOMONO’s most sought-after styles, the Martin and the Ethan.

With the arrival of the Grand series, KOMONO offers a range of possibilities that will suit all faces.

 

Forgoing an obvious minimalism, the new campaign, shot by long-time collaborator Pierre Debusschere, features a fresh take on KOMONO’s well-established visual language. Marked by the spontaneous cut-out of models contrasted to a bright orange backdrop, the campaign highlights this season’s most celebrated styles in unparalleled fashion.

KOMONO x Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp capsule

 

KOMONO is proud to introduce its collaboration with the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. An incubator for new talent and innovative design, the Academy has been on the forefront of global fashion since the rise of the Antwerp Six and remains one of its most influential voices. Out of their mutual interest for experimentation and innovation, KOMONO presents a capsule created by four graduate students. With its exploration of innovative forms, search for new colour combinations and pursue for the original treatment of materials, the collection reimagines the eyewear of tomorrow.

The whole collection started with one phrase ‘’it’s cold, I’m just chilling’’.

I was inspired by winter and combined this with the idea of sitting at home on the sofa. The overall atmosphere transmits a certain coldness and conveys my feelings of being lonely and longing for family as an international student in a foreign country.

I started putting together the collection after watching ‘’Ex Machina’’, this really polished movie about artificial intelligence. The whole aesthetic is based on laboratories and has this very clean feel to it. The idea of playing with a mask for this project appealed to me a lot. I started to do research into the negative space of these objects in order to create a new kind of shape.

“See you in the fog” references adolescence and depicts a teenager’s concerns of not fitting into a grown-up world, as well as his or her attempts to do so. Set in a forest rave in Stockholm, it connects contemporary rave culture with new ways of preserving nature and craftsmanship. Technical materials are linked with contrasting natural inputs and traditional techniques. The unisex sunglasses reference trees which are tinted blue, yellow and green by artificial strobe lights.

My main goal was to create the effect of make-up in eyewear. As make-up is always applied onto the skin, I was interested in transforming it into an object or accessory that you can easily put on and off. The glasses consist of one colored lens that covers the face which is then enhanced with gradient prints and embellished with rhinestones.

Radical in reduction

 

 

A continuation of the Fall/Winter 2018 season, the new KOMONO Optical collection defies the pull of gravity for a weightless feel. Defined by modern silhouettes and pure construction, Spring/Summer 2019 explores the radical in reduction.

 

A force of attraction, the Gravity collection features supremely light and flexible laser-cut metal frames. Vibrant new colorways, such as electric blue and neon pink, inject brightness into impossibly slender frames.

 

A surprising twist to the Elementary collection, the Elementary Gap adds a sense of airiness to KOMONO’s core optical collection.

 

The Johnny, a hexagon-shaped metal frame with pronounced double bridge, is introduced for a strong graphic look.

KOMONO announces partnership with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp

 

 

KOMONO is proud to announce its official partnership with the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. For centuries, Antwerp has been the home to innovative fashion: from intricate lace to the game-changing Antwerp Six. Today, Antwerp remains a key city within the global fashion scene with the Royal Academy as the main incubator for new talent and innovative design. KOMONO has spawned from this hub of creativity and aesthetics, and brings the essence of Antwerp to the world.

 

KOMONO will work together with a selected number of master students in the creation of a capsule eyewear collection linked to the students’ personal work. KOMONO’s mission is to aid the students’ exploration of innovative forms, their search for new colour combinations and their pursue for the original treatment of materials – and this related to the eyewear category. Workshops, given by KOMONO’s designers and product developers, will develop the students’ skills in 3D drawing/printing, tech sheets, material knowledge and manufacturing. The students will be given complete transparency and accountability as they will be involved from blank page to finished product.

About the Royal Academy of Antwerp

Founded in 1963, the Fashion Department at the Antwerp Academy emphasises the development of an artistic and innovative fingerprint. Students will be encouraged to work with new forms, original remakes of materials and alternative, creative processes. As a soon-to-be fashion designer, students are challenged with new and unexpected experiences.

In the early 1980s the rise of the Antwerp Six – along with Martin Margiela – brought the Fashion Department international fame and recognition. Since 2006, and until today, the Fashion Department of Antwerp continues to produce countless of talented conceptual designers under the guidance of Walter Van Beirendonck, one of the members of the Antwerp Six. Graduates from the Academy include Demna Gvasalia, Kris Van Assche, Haider Ackermann, Peter Pilotto, among others.
